Oregon Roll Call
Hi folks!
We've got a pretty good group going here and hopefully that can translate into some good barefoot/minimalist running in Oregon!
So who is the Oregon chapter? What do we want to see here? Post on this thread to introduce yourself and let us know what you're looking for in a chapter forum.
Peace,
Z
Hey, I live in Portland and always run in Mt. Tabor park, because my house is one block away from it. I've been barefoot running for 3 or 4 years now.. you can read a little bit more detail about my transition in this blog entry. I've done a few local races, organized by the Oregon Road Runners, barefoot. I'm not fast... 9 min/mile on a good day.
I'm not sure what I'm looking for from the Oregon chapter, but carpooling to distant races might be one place to start. I don't have a car of my own (though I do use zipcar). My next race will be Ole's Assault in Astoria Sept. 19.
I find all sorts of people are curious about barefoot running right now; they WANT to try something like it... though I have only ever seen 1 other person in Mt Tabor Park actually doing it. I've stopped trying to recruit people; I am not confident about coaching them through the transition. But I can see a need for some beginner's seminars to refer people to. If someone else was willing to teach such a thing I could assist. And I personally would like to get an intermediate or advanced level advice on how to do rougher trails and gravel.
I usually do my "big run" on Sunday and have a beer in my garden afterwards during my household's semi-public "family dinner." If anyone wants to meet up that time and place might work.
Cheers!
Nice to meet you Stomper! I do Mt. Tabor as a pretty regular weekday run from work. Well, lately it hasn't been pretty regular because as I posted on my blog on this site I haven't actually been running much the last couple of months except for occasional crazy all day bouts. But for the last couple years I've been doing Mt Tabor on average a couple few times a week.
Hi guys,
When the time comes and you want to schedule some group runs, be sure to plan them through your chapter here: http://www.barefootrunners.org/build2/chapters/oregon-chapter
Thanks much,
TJ
P.S. Good to see you're back at it Zeke. Missed you.
Hi zeke and rest of the tribe, I've been a barefoot hiker/walker for most of my life backhome, but never did any serious runs until a year ago. Luckily I had pretty strong feet sole to begin with so no much blisters for me. I'm a very active person with many hobies going on at the same time (raising kids, triathlons, culture, science, PhD, God, research, and running barefoot!, which by the way my dad and I chased a deer in "el avila" coastal range, back in the days when they were not hunted, you are lucky if you find one today.
I would like to organize some runs/workshops in the area. I have done workshops with only a handful of people. I read about the race this month that Zeke put togehter and I think it would be great to do something similar closer to corvallis/eugene to unite the different tribes from Oregon. My suggestion would be to do it at the end of next month before the rain comes. I have few people interested and some ideas where this can take place.
In the mean time I am interested on starting weekly runs if anyone is in the Corvallis area.
Look forward to meeting all of you. barefoot soil.
Hi everyone!
Wow, this is great. So stoked to meet all of you, even if only remotely (for now). I just moved to Portland after living in Tahiti for almost 20 years. Everyone do your best to hold back the 1. Why d'ya do that? and 2. You better get ready for winter.
I went to school in Nor Cal but grew up on a coral atoll going barefoot all the time. Ran X-C in highschool and know the Mt Tamalpais Watershed in Marin County as well as anyone but only ran barefoot a few times then. This was late 80's and it was all about the waffle design that came from this part of the woods.
So I've been here for a month, breaking my feet in and getting to know gorgeous Forest Park. Zeke's profile pic gives me foot envy and I look forward to getting deeper into this new adventure that has just begun for me.
I have been farming Tahitian pearls for years and am also a professional photog. Here are my sites if y'all are interested.

Let's go running!

Welcome, Josh. We happen to be needing photographers to take images for the BRS's News Show on the home page here. If you are interested, please check out this link: http://www.barefootrunners.org/build2/forum-topic/brs-hiring Thanks!
Hey everyone. I live in Beaverton, right down the street from Nike. I run a lot in Forest Park, in my Biks, i know, i know, it's not BF. I was able to run for twenty mins there bf but had to put the shoes on.
I've been going bf since around April. I can do a few miles but can't run nearly everyday like i once was. I am running the Warrior Dash next weekend. It's going to be my first race ever. No idea how i'll do since i don't really time how i run. I run with my little llasa ahpso who i have to stop for a numbe of times so i can only guess as to how fast i run.
I'm definitely up for meeting once a week for a run with some fellow bf'rs or minimalists.
Mike
Is this Warrior Dash the same as the one Ronin did, where he jumped through fire?! Geez! Be careful out there. And have a blast!
So do you run by Nike wearing your VFFs? Do you run like back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth? Hee.
TJ,
your crazy. i've run on the campus once. i was wearing my biks. i tried again the other day bf but the track is wood chip and very uncomfortable. i've run around the streets surrounding Nike. they take up a city block.
yeah, i get to jump over fire. can't wait. i want to check the course out first to see if i can do it bf or if i need my biks.
Mike

And I'll start. People call me Zeke, and I started my barefoot running journey on the Terwillinger hills path in Portland, Oregon in 2004. I ran off and on barefoot for a few years (mostly off), largely out of anthropological interest, until I got serious about minimalist running on trails in 2007 after discovering Vibram Five Fingers. A year later I'd mostly abandoned my shoes and kept in touch with other minimalist ultrarunners on BF Ted's mailing list. More details about that journey can be found on my blog Distance Minimally. A year after that Born To Run hit and, well, you probably know the rest from there. Because I'd toed the line of 100 mile trail ultramarathons in my vffs by the time it hit the radar of the population at large I found myself very active in the conversation that ensued as people wanted to know more about running as we were made to do it. Barefoot/minimalist running is no longer a solitary sport and there's actually a reasonable chance to see other bf/minimalist runners out training or at races.
For me, that chance of actually meeting up with other runners is the main reason for a chapter forum, although being able to share local information like what kind of terrain to expect on given routes or trails to plan accordingly is a good application as well.
I hope to be able to see some conversation here about races people are taking part in and encouragement for others to join in some barefoot running!
Peace,
Z
ps - if you live in Portland, there's a great Facebook page dedicated to minimalist running in this fine city. Check out the Portland Minimalist Running Club!
